De Ferrara a Lisboa: tribulações do cristão-novo Alexandre Reinel, preso no cárcere do Santo Ofício

Abstract

Alexandre Reinel figura entre o número dos cristãos-novos que foram apanhados nas malhas da Inquisição portuguesa, sobretudo a partir da segunda metade de Quinhentos, aquando do seu regresso a Portugal, provenientes geralmente das comunidades judaico-portuguesas estabelecidas em Antuérpia, Ferrara ou Veneza. Ao réu foram curiosamente apreendidos um livrinho de contactos e umas cartas não identificadas, apensas ao processo, cuja presente análise tornou possível traçar a identificação da remetente e do destinatário e interpretar o conteúdo das enigmáticas missivas. O cruzamento dos dados registados no processo de Alexandre Reinel com os de várias outras fontes documentais permitiu reconstruir e acompanhar de perto as actividades e o percurso trilhado pela família Reinel-Abendana através da Europa de Quinhentos, nomeadamente o papel desempenhado por Alexandre Reinel na rede de apoio à emigração ilegal dos cristãos-novos.

Alexandre Reinel stands in the number of those New Christians caught by the Portuguese Inquisition namely in the second half of the 16th Century on returning to Portugal from the Portuguese Sephardic communities settled in Antwerp, Ferrara or Venice. Both a contact list and some previously unidentified letters were appended to his criminal deed whose recognition only possible through this investigation sheds some light on the characterization of the parts involved in this enigmatic epistolary. The crossing of all the available data concerning Alexandre Reinel and no only from his criminal deed in the Portuguese Inquisition as permitted hence to reconstruct and closely perceive is activities, and those of the clan Reinel-Abendana towards a better understanding of their importance in creating a safe net supporting the New Christians endeavor to flee Portugal.
