Alexithymia corresponds to a set of affective and cognitive characteristics, clinically observed in several patients, marked by the weak capacity to understand what another person is feeling and to share the feelings with others. This construct is defined as a disturbance of emotional regulation, that is, the ability to experience and differentiate a full range of emotions. The aim of this work is to study the relationship between alexithymia, emotional regulation and mindfulness. The sample of the present study consisted of 241 participants, 80 males and 161 females, aged between 13 and 62 years (M (SD) = 34.22 (10.112)). Participants were having psychological counseling in a private clinic when they were evaluated with a research protocol consisting of: Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20); Philadelphia Mindfulness Scale (PHMLS) and Emotion Regulation of Others and Self (EROS). The results show that the greater the improvement in affection, the greater the patients' awareness of their emotions. At the same time, the greater the intrinsic worsening of affection, the greater the level of difficulty of identifying, describing emotions and the value of total alexithymia. It should be noted that the higher the values of extrinsic affection improvement, the lower the values related to the variables difficulty in identifying emotions, acceptance and total alexithymia. Equally inversely proportional are the values related to the intrinsic improvement of affection regarding acceptance, difficulty in identifying emotions and total alexithymia. Finally, the higher the levels of awareness, the lower the values of intrinsic affect worsening, difficulty in describing and identifying emotions, as well as total alexithymia. Regarding gender differences, the figures reveal that men have a greater difficulty describing emotions, which may raise the question of stereotypes regarding the masculinity factor. Finally, it was found that the predictors of higher levels of alexithymia at the level of emotional regulation are a decrease in extrinsic improvement and intrinsic improvement of affect, and an increase in the intrinsic worsening of affect. At the level of mindfulness, it has been found that higher levels of alexithymia are associated with lower indicators of awareness and acceptance. The contributions of this study to the optimization of diagnosis and interest in psychopathology are mentioned.
