The aim of this work involves designing a driver for light-emitting diodes (LEDs) enabling visible light communications (VLC) whilst dimming. This will require prior knowledge of the LED characteristics and the correct choice of a dimming technique for the driver. To ensure that the signal does not interfere with the dimming, and vice versa, the nuances covering these two operations must be analysed. The driver will use digital to analog converters (DAC) to support multiple types of signals and to facilitate its integration with other communication systems. The interface between this device and the driver’s output stage must ensure competitive signal speeds. This is possible by swapping the op amps for current conveyors, which are multifaceted devices that allow current input from the DAC. The driver’s regulator will have to support competitive transmission speeds and relatively high regulation ranges, but it will be necessary to adapt the regulator topology in order to drive the LED’s bias current and signal current separately. The output stage will use Darligtons composed of radio frequency bipolar transistors to ensure high bandwidth and high regulation ranges. The final driver has a cut-off frequency of 20 MHz for ON-OFF signal types, maximum signal current of 80 mA and maximum bias current of 320 mA. This driver enables visible light communications during dimming, and it can also support several highbrightness LEDs in series. |
