As
Changes in female sexuality during their life cycle are normal. As women get older, these changes are more noticeable. Society still believes that, with menopause, desire and sexual activity start to decrease. The present study aimed to explore the effect of age on how women respond to different stimuli with sexual content (explicit, moderately explicit and romantic images), in terms of emotional valence, arousal and sexual content. Seventy-four women participated in this study, aged between 18 and 77 years old. Participants were divided in 3 age groups: 18-29, 30-45 and over 45 years old, with 27, 22 and 25 participants in each group respectively. Participants were asked to fill a sociodemographic questionnaire and were asked to rate a number of images with different sexual content on various characteristics. The results showed significant differences in subjective sexual response between older and younger women. Globally, older women revealed a higher tendency to respond to explicit, moderately explicit and romantic images as more positive and inducing of higher sexual excitement. Considering the lack of studies that use this type of methodology to evaluate subjective responses to images with varying degrees of sexual content, this study aims to contribute to the knowledge about how images with different sexual content are interpreted by women of all ages. |
