Influência da empatia e da alexitimia nas inferências sociais a partir de imagens ambientais e faces

Abstract

Muitas vezes os julgamentos inerentes à formação de primeiras impressões são somente baseados na informação proveniente da face, sendo que as expressões faciais de emoções constituem um estímulo que poderá estar subjacente a diversas inferências sociais. Assim, a literatura sugere que a capacidade para reconhecer expressões faciais de emoções poderá ser fundamental na atribuição de características sociais às faces. Uma vez que tanto a alexitimia como a baixa capacidade empática são caracterizadas por um comprometimento no reconhecimento de emoções, o presente estudo teve como principal intuito investigar a influência destas na inferência de certas características sociais a partir de imagens ambientais de faces. Para tal participaram neste estudo 84 estudantes da Universidade de Aveiro que completaram a Escala de Alexitimia de Toronto (TAS-20) e o Índice de Reatividade Emocional (IRI), bem como realizaram uma tarefa de avaliação de imagens ambientais de faces em 10 características sociais percebidas, nomeadamente atratividade, saúde, feminilidade/masculinidade, dominância, agressividade, acessibilidade, competência, inteligência, confiabilidade e quão caloroso o indivíduo parece. Os resultados revelam que os indivíduos com baixa capacidade empática fazem atribuições de menor dominância, acessibilidade, feminilidade-masculinidade, confiabilidade e saúde, em comparação com os mais empáticos. Por sua vez, quanto maior for o nível de alexitimia, maior é a perceção de confiabilidade e menor é a perceção de agressividade. Os resultados do presente estudo revelam que a empatia e a alexitimia parecem influenciar a inferência de traços sociais a partir de faces e como tal poderão afetar as relações interpessoais, uma vez que estas são em grande parte condicionadas pelas inferências que fazemos em relação aos outros.

Often the judgments involved in the formation of first impressions are only based on the facial information, being the facial expressions of emotions a stimulus that may underlie the different social inferences. Thus the literature suggests that the ability to recognize facial expressions of emotions can be crucial in assigning social characteristics to the faces. Since both alexithymia and low empathic capacity are characterized by impairment in emotion recognition, the main objective of this study was to investigate the influence of these individual factors in the inference of certain characteristics from ambient images of faces. To his end, 84 students of the University of Aveiro participated in this study. Participants completed the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI), and performed a task to evaluate 100 ambient images of faces on 10 social characteristics, including attractiveness, health, femininity/masculinity, dominance, accessibility, competence, intelligence, trustworthiness and warmth. The results showed that individuals with low empathic capacity have a lower perception of dominance, accessibility, femininity-masculinity, trustworthiness and health, compared to the more empathic. In turn, the greater the level of alexithymia, the greater is the perception of trustworthiness and the lower is the perception of aggressiveness. The results of this study reveal that empathy and alexithymia seem to influence the inference of social characteristics from faces and may affect the interpersonal relationships, as these are largely conditioned by the social inferences we make in relation to others.
