ABSTRACT: This empirical study seeks to investigate how (a) perceptions of authentic leadership explains the affective commitment in the leader and the organization, (b) perceptions of authentic leadership influence employees’ positive emotions, (c) positive emotions predict employees’ emotional commitment in the leader and in the organization (d) positive emotions mediate the relationship between authentic leadership and the two dimensions of affective commitment. The sample consists of 204 individuals, non-teaching staff of the University of Aveiro. The results suggest that (a) perceptions of authentic leadership positively influence affective commitment in the leader and the organization, (b) perceptions of authentic leadership encourage followers’ positive emotions, (c) positive emotions foster employees’ affective commitment in leader and the organization and (d) positive emotions mediate, partially, the relationship between the prediction of authentic leadership and affective commitment in the leader and the organization. The study contains several limitations, including the fact that the variables were collected from the same source. However, the psychometric properties of instruments are satisfactory. Overall, this work helps to understand the role and importance of authentic leadership within organizations. |
