Abstract: Drivenbyenvironmentalchallengesandglobalmovementtocarbonleantechnologies,thepyroelec trolysisprocessforironextractionfromoxidemeltsisbeingproposedasaninterestingalternativetothe traditional steelmaking.Still,oneofthecriticalissuesimpactingtheprospectsofthistechnologyincludes the developmentofappropriateanodematerials,takingintoaccounttheextremelyaggressivenatureof oxidemeltsatveryhightemperatures.Hereweproposeauniqueconceptofconsumableanodefor pyroelectrolysisprocess,basedonmulticomponentferrospinelbasedceramics.Theelectrochemical studies andpostmortemXRD/SEM/EDSanalysisoftheelectrolysiscellshavedemonstratedthatceramic spinel anodescansustainsignificant currentdensitiesformakingtheprocessfeasible,whiletheir consumption byinteractionwithSicontainingspeciesfromthemoltenelectrolytewasfoundtobe moderate.
