| pt |
dc.description.abstract | This doctoral thesis is divided into two parts. The first one comprises the theoretical and epistemological framework, and the second (consists on) the empirical study. The first part discusses the concepts of power, discourse, and identity (particularly gender identity(ies)) in the context of Cultural Studies and then addresses the media as a key vehicle in the construction, dissemination, and interpretation of gender differences. The second part, which begins by introducing the research methodology, presents an empirical study that seeks, through the analysis of (textual and iconic) discourses in a local newspaper – O Ilhavense – to answer the following research question: Was Ílhavo a matriarchal society (in the 1950s) or was it not? | pt |
