Ser violetista, ainda há discriminação?

Abstract

Neste trabalho procurou-se averiguar as representações face à viola e aos violetistas, designadamente a existência de preconceito e estereótipos face a este grupo e ao instrumento. Da metodologia aplicada fazem parte três questionários direccionados a três grupos distintos: outros músicos, violetistas e público em geral, no intuito de avaliar e comparar as suas opiniões relativamente a emoções, actitudes, estereótipos e piadas acerca da viola e dos seus executantes. Uma vez que este instrumento é bastante desconhecido fora do mundo da música, investigou-se ainda as opiniões do público em geral (que não são músicos) acerca do instrumento viola a partir da apresentação de um trecho interpretado por um músico executando uma viola d’arco ou um violino. No sentido de fundamentar este Projecto, realizou-se a revisão da literatura acerca do preconceito, estereótipos e discriminação em contextos intergrupais. Apresenta-se, ainda, informação acerca da viola e do seu repertório, como forma de valorizar o percurso deste instrumento no panorama musical. Faz-se também uma análise aos comentários depreciativos acerca do violetista existentes na tratadística/bibliografia de música e é apresentada uma transcrição de um vasto conjunto de piadas acerca da viola e dos seus executantes, como forma de evidenciar a forma como estes são discriminados pelos outros músicos de orquestra. Os resultados obtidos a partir da realização do estudo empírico permitem concluir que se por um lado não existe preconceito negativo explícito face à viola e aos violetistas, e o público em geral avalia de um modo positivo o som do instrumento, por outro registam-se formas subtis de depreciação relativa deste grupo e do instrumento da parte do grupo de outros músicos.

This work aimed to study the representations towards the viola and the violists, specifically the existence of prejudice and stereotyping against this group and the instrument. The chosen methodology includes three questionnaires directed to three different groups: other musicians, violists and the general public, aiming to evaluate and compare their views on emotions, attitudes, stereotypes and jokes about the viola and its performers. Since this instrument is quite unknown outside the world of music, the present research also investigated the opinion of the public (which are not musicians) on the instrument viola by collecting their impressions of an excerpt played by a musician performing a viola or a violin. A review of the literature about prejudice, stereotypes and discrimination in intergroup contexts was conducted so as delineate the theoretical framework of the project. The present work also includes information about the viola and its repertoire, in order to highlight the value of the instrument in the music scene. An analysis was performed of derogatory comments about the violist in treatises/music bibliography, including a review of a wide range of jokes about the viola and its performers as a way to show how they are discriminated against by others orchestra musicians. The results of the empirical study allow us to conclude that while on the one hand there is no explicit negative prejudice against the viola and the violists and the general public evaluates in a positive way the sound of the instrument, on the other hand there were subtle expressions by other musicians of relative depreciation of this group and the instrument.
