Rehabilitation and conservation have been assuming a greater importance, affirming themselves as an alternative to construction of new buildings and as a solution of rehabilitation of the built heritage. Roman cement was one of the main materials used to coat the facades of buildings in 19th and 20th century. However, with the discovery of new materials, it has fallen into the disuse and the lack of knowledge about this material led to the use of inappropriate binders in the conservation of these buildings. In this way, roman cement presents nowadays a new interest to rehabilitation, since it must always be considered compatibility and similarity of materials. This dissertation studies the behaviour of mortars based on roman cement, using different binders and volumetric features and performing mortar specimens. In this context, it was carried out a set of laboratory tests which allowed the characterization of raw materials used for mortars production. Posteriorly, in order to obtain an effective comparison of mortars in study, the specimens performed were submitted to the laboratory tests, being determined the main characteristics of tested specimens. The data obtained indicate behaviour’ tendencies of the mortars studied, allowing to evaluate their behaviour in relation to rehabilitation and conservation of ancient buildings and allowing closing the gap on existing information about roman cement mortars. |
