The traditional mortars experience problems with the incorporation of PCMs, as workability and handling. This work comes with the aim of developing and characterize a new composite material, consisting in the incorporation of microencapsulated phase change materials in a cement and expanded clay matrix. The bibliographic review has served to help us know the different types found in PCMs, its advantages and disadvantages and, finally, their application, particularly in buildings. This was followed by an evaluation of two new mortars with different particle sizes of expanded clay with or without PCM, in order to determine the mechanical and thermal performance of each one. Tests were performed to determine the physical properties such as density and capillarity, the mechanical behavior such as compressive and flexural strength, modulus of elasticity and retraction and, finally, thermal as thermal conductivity and diffusivity, specific heat and enthalpy. Lastly, this new material was compared to a “current mortar” with PCM, used in other works. The results show that PCM does not interfere mechanical and physically with mortar, particularly mortar of expanded clay with less granulation. In fact, it is the opposite. It leads to good results. As regards the thermal properties, it was found that PCM helped the thermal performance of mortar, but its own performance can be damaged in the developed matrices of Leca®. |
