Turismo e inclusão social : o caso das crianças desfavorecidas

Abstract

Atualmente o turismo é encarado como um direito social. Contudo a atividade turística está associada a vários constrangimentos que colocam em causa a sua prática por parte dos grupos mais vulneráveis da sociedade, nos quais se incluem as crianças carenciadas. Nesse sentido, recentemente vários estudos têm surgido com o interesse em investigar por um lado, os impactos negativos que a inibição da oportunidade de passar férias fora de casa pode ter na vida dos grupos mais vulneráveis da sociedade, e por outro lado, os benefícios que a prática turística pode ter no seu bem-estar e inclusão social. A presente dissertação pretende alargar o conhecimento sobre a última abordagem, apresentando resultados de uma investigação que analisa os benefícios alcançados por crianças carenciadas no âmbito da sua participação num Programa de Turismo Social em Portugal, nomeadamente, na Colónia de Férias da Fundação “O Século”. Com a aplicação de métodos de recolha de dados quantitativos e qualitativos adaptados às crianças, obtiveram-se resultados que demonstram que o acesso à prática turística proporciona o alcance de vários benefícios essenciais para o seu bem-estar e inclusão social. Verificou-se ainda que existem dois fatores que têm considerável poder explicativo sobre os benefícios alcançados pelas crianças, nomeadamente, o fator “descoberta e diversão”, e o fator “autoestima e desenvolvimento pessoal”. Estes fatores demonstram que para as crianças a importância da sua participação neste Programa passa, pela descoberta de novidades (amigos, pessoas, atividades) e de capacidades/aptidões que proporcionam a diversão e criação de memórias felizes, bem como, pela confiança em si próprias e conhecimentos que adquirem ao longo da sua estadia. Fundamentado nos resultados obtidos, este estudo, pretende ainda alertar para a necessidade de implementação de políticas sociais que visem a participação turística de crianças desfavorecidas, como forma de combate á sua situação de pobreza de exclusão social.

Currently tourism is seen as social right. However tourism activity is associated with various constraints that jeopardize their practice by the most vulnerable groups in society, which includes underprivileged children. Thereby, several studies have recently emerged with the interest in investigating. Firstly, the negative impacts that inhibition of the opportunity to spend a holiday away from home can have for the most vulnerable groups in society. On the other hand the benefits that this opportunity can have on they well-being and social inclusion. This study aims to extend the knowledge about the latter approach by reporting results of an investigation that examines the benefits achieved by poor children in their participation on the Portugal Social Tourism Program: Colónia de Férias da Fundação “O Século”. Using a qualitative and quantitative data collect methods adapted for children, the study found that the access to holidaying opportunities contributed to enhance well-being and social inclusion for the children studied. The study also identified two factors that explaining the benefits achieved by children, the first factor was "discovery and fun," and the second factor was "self-esteem and personal development." These factors show that, for the children studied, the importance of their participation in the Social Program is associated with, the discovery of new features (friends, people, activities) and new skills that provide fun and creating happy memories, and, with an increase of confidence in themselves and general knowledge that they obtained throughout their stay in the program. Substantiated in the findings, this study also aims to draw attention to the need for the implementation of social policies that provide tourist participation of disadvantaged children as a way to combat their poverty and social exclusion situation.
