| pt |
dc.description.abstract | The following study has the main goal of analyzing the comprehension of idioms in children with hearing impairment. The experimental group consists of ten children with hearing impairment. The control group consist of ten children with typical language development. All children are native speakers of European Portuguese. The age range of the study was between five and ten years old, from preschool to the fourth grade. To analyse the comprehension of idioms was built a data collection tool based on other instruments built and validated by different researchers who are dedicated to the study of figurative sense. The results show a clear difference in the performance of the two groups, with better outcomes for children with typical language development. Congruent idioms turn out to be more easily understood than the incongruous for both groups. Children from preschool and first grade show similar results in both groups. Children with hearing impairment achieve more literal interpretations of idioms when compared to children with typical language development surveyed in this research. | pt |
