This study presents and evaluates a formation course (FC) with the focus on the History of mathematics, where historical problems solving and its didactical exploration were faced as a methodology asking for attention in pre service primary teacher education. The main research question centres on the need of to comprehend the contribution of the FC to the development of the pedagogical knowledge of the future-teachers and its contribution to the promotion of innovative teaching strategies. The theoretical framework structures around three main areas: History and philosophy of science/mathematics, mathematics teaching and pre service teacher education. In the first, we analyse the changes that occurred in the contemporary Philosophy of mathematics, namely those concerning epistemological relevance of the history and of the construction of mathematical knowledge, as well as their educational implications. In the second, we give attention to the more recent orientations of mathematics teaching, directed to the development of mathematical competencies. Finally, we profound and analyse the concept of pedagogical content knowledge, starting by the discussion of different ways of understanding the notion of teacher professional knowledge and we discuss recommendations for mathematics pre service teacher education for primary education. The study has a qualitative research approach with an interpretative base. From January 2005 to July 2006, was implemented a FC involving an articulated set of research interventions taking place in the context of different subjects in the two final academic years of a graduation in Primary Education. Beyond the whole group of ten students, three student-teachers in the ambit of their pedagogical practice were particularly involved in the work. The main data of the study were taken by observation (participated and nonparticipated), audio taped formation sessions, audio and video taped pedagogical practice sessions, questionnaires filled by the student-teachers as well as interviews to them and to their mentors. The results of the study allow us to state that, by historical problem didactic solving and exploration, the future-teachers were confronted with the social and cultural face of mathematics and with the challenge of to introduce them in their teaching. As the participant student-teachers stated, corroborated by their mentors, it was possible to create and to implement teaching and learning strategies and activities centred in historical problem solving which contributed to the establishment of connections with different curricular subjects (particularly with history, geography and language) and to highlight the application of mathematics to ancient daily. The analysis of the pedagogical practices of the future-teachers suggests that the FC contributed to the development of their pedagogical knowledge, mainly at the level: (a) of understanding the didactic relevance of historical problems in the ambit of mathematical content, of the potentialities to create interdisciplinary spaces and in the ambit of the pupils motivation for doing mathematical activities; (b) of the images given in the classroom about the social and human face of mathematics, and about the nature and mathematical activity as a science. Related to the understanding of educational potentialities of the integration of the history of mathematics in the teaching and learning process, the results of the study permit to infer the interest and pertinence of to recourse to historical problems to the concretization of its integration in primary education, particularly to 9-11 years old pupils. As a global evaluation of the FP all the participants agree that the experience was very positive for their professional formation, deepening their pedagogical knowledge to teach mathematics and allowing making concrete innovative teaching practices for their pupils. The cultural and social mathematics approach gave by solving historical problems was an aspect of the FC that all the participant student teachers highlight as well relevant for their professional formation.en
