The present thesis contemplates a study on the micro machining of polymers - including PET, POM-C, PVC and UHMWPE HMWPE – in a conventional CNC lathe, using sintered carbides cutting tools. The first stage concerns the assessment of the behavior of polymers before machining, through the verification of surface finish, the temperature in the cutting tools and the effect of shear rate. In the second stage a verification activity was led in order to establish the best parameters to obtain a part in the micro escale, as well as the influence of the cantilever length. The last stage of this work consisted in the production of parts with small diameters, aiming to verify the capacity of its production in conventional CNC lathes. The study conducted led to the conclusion that softer materials tend to be difficult to machine, not allowing the obtainment of reduced diameter. Among the tested materials, PVC showed a greater propensity for miniaturization, having obtained both a good surface finish and a low defect of form. |
