This study is based on a problem which affects most school systems, and represents a major concern to society in general: the poor results obtained by a large number of students while learning experimental sciences, namely physics, and the decrease of interest which young people show for key areas of science. From the professional experience of this study’s author results evidence of what we consider to be serious gaps regarding the student’s knowledge when they start the 10º ano de escolaridade (equivalent to a 10th grade), referring to simple electrical circuits, either at conceptual level or laboratory level. Within this context, we sought to detect possible informal ideas and/or misconceptions, examine the skills and difficulties experienced by students regarding simple electric circuits, and investigate possible reasons underlying the weaknesses expressed by students. We also sought to evaluate the effect of implementation of a didactic sequence based on the concern to solve the problems identified regarding students’ learning issues. The theoretical framework adopted was based on the meaningful learning theory, first proposed by Ausubel and enriched by the contribution of theories developed by various researchers, including Novak, Vygodsky, Vergnaud and Moreira. The didactic sequence chosen was used on a 10th grade students’ class of science and technology, and its elaboration and implementing privileged practical work, including laboratory work, social interaction in the classroom, and the teacher’s mediation role. Besides this group of students a group of 33 teachers participated in this study. The latter answered a questionnaire, which aimed at gathering information which would contribute to answer the research questions. Given the nature of the problem under study and the small number of participants, a case study was used as a research strategy, therefore it is not a study which aims to generalize the results. The analysis of the results obtained using data gathered with different instruments shows that the didactic approach proved positive, as it allowed an evolution of the students regarding the conceptual field of electrical circuits, and allowed the development of various skills, namely laboratory related. The results also reveal some evidence which may eventually explain the weaknesses revealed by the students’ learning issues regarding simple electric circuits.
