ABSTRACT: The scientific-technological advances have made indisputable contributions to the welfare of human beings, but have also enabled an unbridled economic growth, which has caused some damage, such as environmental degradation and increasing social inequality. The international community has been aware of this situation and it has sought to reach agreements and set targets in order to achieve a kind of development where economic, environmental and social welfare appear interrelated: sustainable development. Only this can in fact provide a management and a more balanced distribution of resources of the planet. Accordingly, the Education for Sustainable Development, which needs the involvement of all educators, has as objective the training of conscientious citizens who are aware of the problems/challenges facing humanity, and who are able to intervene positively in resolving them. In fact, most of these problems/challenges involve science and technology, for their understanding and for the development of possible solutions. Thus, many authors have argued that Science Education should no longer focus on exposure and memorization of concepts and theories, often empty in meaning for students; instead, learning the scientific concepts and processes should emerge as a necessity perceived to understand and find answers to current problems, based on STS, that is, related to social and environmental implications of the progress of science and their technological artefacts. Only then can we breed scientifically literate citizens who are more critical, responsible and committed to the world and its problems. The guidelines on the perspective of Education by Research (Ensino por Pesquisa) are deeply connected to these current purposes in Science Education. World hunger is the issue addressed in this research work. In a world that produces enough food to meet a much higher population, more than 850 million people lack a sufficient supply to meet their basic nutritional needs. In all countries there are people deprived of such a basic right, but it is mainly in Africa, Asia and South America where the scourge of hunger reaches truly alarming proportions. Poor countries in these regions face complex problems, many caused by the global economic and political system that favours the rich always at the expense of the needy. However, several possible solutions have been suggested to combat hunger in the world: by making the international trade system fairer, increasing the productivity of poor farmers through sustainable agriculture, investing in agricultural research and development of improved technologies and infrastructure, alleviating external debt, dealing with global warming, making western food healthier and sustainable, helping people out of poverty, promoting a healthy democratic governance, establishing peace, providing the poor with secure access to land, providing Official Development Assistance and improving food aid in emergency situations. Transgenics have also been mentioned by some as a possible solution to the scourge of world hunger, but their implementation is surrounded by a wide controversy, since the possible benefits of such contrast with the potential risks. Indeed, the problem of hunger is so complex that it requires the participation and coordination of various areas of knowledge in the search for understanding and its resolution such as: science and technology, sociology, economics, politics, education, ethics and health. Since the issue of research was based on how world hunger could be explored with students in their 3rd and 4th years at school, in order to sensitize them to this problem, we started by identifying their prior knowledge in order to conceive, implement and evaluate a Didactic Proposal on the issue in question. Thus, we have been able to see that the vast majority of students identified that in Africa there are many hungry people and just over half acknowledged that in Europe and North America there is plenty of food for the majority of their populations; and in relation to South America, Asia and Oceania, we noted a widespread ignorance regarding the amount of food that the people of these regions have access to. As for the measures to be taken to ensure that all people have enough food in the world, the proposals of the students were, essentially, to give food to the poor/those who are hungry. The conceived Didactic Proposal took into account the guidance from the perspective of Education by Research and the eleven Activities that comprise the Didactic Proposal cover several specific skills of the various disciplines of the Portuguese National Curriculum for Compulsory Teaching; it was implemented in a class of 4th grade through the Project “The end of hunger in the world: Let’s feed this objective!”. The data obtained from the final questionnaires made to students and the class teacher, the reflections made with the teacher, as well as our own observations during the implementation, allowed us to infer that students: became aware of the issue, acknowledged the importance of it being dealt with at school, they loved working on the Project and through it they developed knowledge, skills, attitudes and values defined initially. The class teacher, in turn, stressed that the Activities are of high quality and relevance, supporting its dissemination by schools. In fact, we hope that the Didactic Proposal reaches other educators and helps in this complex but deeply urgent and passionate mission of educating for sustainability...
