| pt |
dc.description.abstract | The work developed in this dissertation is consistent with the general aim of valorisation of wastes coming from eucalyptus Kraft pulp units, namely bottom ash and fly ash from biomass furnaces. One of the biggest challenges facing societies in developed countries today is to find an adequate destination for generated residues. The civil construction industry, along with the pulp and paper production industry, which generates thousands of tons of solid waste every year, can develop adequate solid waste disposal strategies. The main purpose of the current dissertation is to investigate the viability of using bottom ash and fly ash in road pavements, analyzing its physical and mineralogical compatibility, as well as its mechanical performance. Considering the purpose of this study, two types of solutions were thus analysed. The first solution involved the creation of soil and residue mixtures, in which the material was revolved to form a single compost. The second solution consisted of superficially placing residues on soil. To evaluate the viability of both solutions, laboratory tests were conducted, including a field trial, and a laboratory-based simulation. It was verified that the simultaneous addition of bottom ash and fly ash is an interesting alternative for valuing these residues in the foundation of road pavements. | pt |
