ABSTRACT: Recently, there has been a growing investment in ICT in Portugal, bringing new approaches for teachers’ and students’ work. One of the aims of these initiatives, like the IEPCP (acronym for “Iniciativa Escolas, Professores e Computadores Portáteis”), is to increase the individual and professional use of ICT. In the context of the IEPCP laptops were delivered to basic (2nd and 3rd) and secondary level schools. The literature indicates that laptops allow new teaching and learning strategies since it is possible to work with them in any place, in any time. Moreover they facilitate learning which is significant and the development of new competencies considered important in an information society. However, new studies are necessary to deeper the understanding of the impact of the laptops use in schools, namely concerning the teachers’ pedagogical strategies. The work present in this dissertation pretend to be a contribution to this type of studies, since it was done in the context of a school were laptops are available through the IEPCP. The main aim of the study was to understand what type of teaching practice and collaboration between teachers entail the availability of laptops to be used in classrooms in a basic school of 2nd and 3rd level. The adopted methodology is qualitative, explanatory and exploratory: a single representative case study was developed, with four units of analysis, being the case the teaching practices involving the use of laptops of four teachers. Preliminary contacts with the ICT coordinator facilitated the comprehension of the IEPCP in this particular school. The ICT coordinator was also essential for the selection of the teachers that participated in the study. For data gathering, the participant teachers were interviewed and some of their lessons observed. The results points to teaching practices that are constrained by the curriculum, being the activities proposed to the students teacher-led. Only in a non disciplinary subject – Area de Projecto – we observed the use of student centered teaching practices. The motivation for use laptops with the students are: the access to different resources available in the Internet; the exploitation of specific software to exercise the content; the development of multiple tasks in the context of the Area de Projecto; the students motivation entailed by the use of laptops. However, since the number of laptops available to use with the students was only 13, the integration of these resources was not as pursued. This in spite of the regular use of those technologies by the observed teachers. Concerning the collaborative work among teachers, the use of laptops seems to have little impact, because the teachers planned the activities mainly individually.por
