The field of metalanguage has great impact on the learning of reading and writing of children, especially in children with difficulties. However, the development of morphological awareness needs a greater number of investigations to conclude exactly the stimulation effect of this competence in reading and writing. Thus, this study aims to investigate the type and nature of the correlation between morphological awareness and reading and writing. In order to fulfill this objective, was applied to a sample of 38 children, divided into experimental group (n=19) and control group (n=19), two assessment instruments: “teste de idade de leitura” (TIL) and a Proof of Morphological Awareness, created specifically for this investigation. The experimental group includes children attending speech therapy due to diagnostic difficulties and disorder of reading and writing. On the other hand, the control group comprises children that do not have any difficulty in these areas. After analyzing collected data, was concluded that there is a statistically significant difference between the groups of children in the study, since the control group revealed a higher experimental group performance in both tests applied. Apart from the above, the results demonstrate a statistically significant correlation between children's performance in the field of reading and children's performance at the level of morphological awareness. It is noted that the correlation is considerably stronger in the experimental group than in the control group. Thus, it was concluded that stimulation of morphological awareness can effectively facilitate and assist the development of reader learning in children, especially in children with difficulties in these areas. |
