ABSTRACT: The enormous scientific/ technological growth which occurred mainly in the second half of the XX century brought on great changes in the conditions and the way of life in our society. The demands of our new and democratic society force us to rethink Science teaching in general and Chemistry in specific. The large spectrum of the Chemistry relations confer to this area of knowledge in Chemistry a crucial importance, being that its phenomenon’s through their intrinsic links with other areas of knowledge affect real manifestations. The chemical and physic proprieties of the different substances depend on the nature of it’s inter and intramolecular relations. Therefore the study of different types of forces which exist among the “particles” are fundamental to study Chemistry and Physic. However this is a very complex issue both in relation to it’s teaching as to its apprenticeship. It’s pedagogic treatment appears to be of extreme importance requiring a clear and somewhat attractive approach which in the long run will help in it’s apprenticeship and comprehension of phenomenon’s which occur in the world around us. The Didactics of Science points out more cultural perspectives about Science teaching. It’s principal purpose is to understand science and technology, their inter-relations and their implications in society. This type of teaching privileges knowledge in motion in opposition to disciplinary knowledge, which is the essence of the Science-Technology-Society Movement. To accept chemistry teaching in a STS perspective where the contents are important to give some meaning to themes and problems, is a promising way but not one very much used in preparing for citizenship and a continuation of studies, recognizing the regulating role that the programmes have in the teaching/ learning process. The Curriculum Reorganization of Basic Schooling that is know happening in Portugal, follow these orientations and proposes teaching science in a way which will give some formation to students for a scientific awareness. It is defended today that Basic Schooling should above all give students the competences which will enable them to interact with society in which they live in, which will also legitimate their expectations in their personal formation of capable citizens exercising their own social responsibilities. Secondary teaching studies, which are not compulsory, have a very important role in the formation of youngsters and in the construction of future societies. In this perspective, the formal chemistry teaching should give knowledge which will permit to establish relations with Chemistry, it’s applications, the technological development and their social implications. It is also important to arouse student’s interest in continuing their studies in scientific areas, in particular in the Chemistry area for which it is vital to give basic knowledge. In this context the STS movement assumes itself as the new philosophy of teaching which adjusts to what is pretended. The STS orientations in Chemistry teaching is considered as a way to reach those goals and also it could motivate the students to study it and give us a more authentic image of what Chemistry really is. The main problem studies were the verification/ analysis “An actual look at the intra and intermolecular forces at different teaching levels, promoting comprehension and interpretation of the properties and of the substances behaviour and the surrounding world?” Being that, the study’s objectivities are based essentially in learning the conceptions and representations that the students have and make of those concepts inherents to the Inter and Intramolecular forces, and also to verify if those conceptions disappear or if they continue after some years of study. The research made through this study will be descriptive, interpretative and quantitative. This study involved 208 students, all of them attending the same school but in different levels. The methodology used was, like I said quantitative. All the data gathered was based on written questionnaires, essentially on closed questions, only one included a more open question. These were given to four different school levels, 8th, 9th, 10th and 12th grades. In the 8th and 10th grade the New Curriculum is being used and in the 9th and 12th grades it is still following the old curriculum programme. The results of the study allow us to reach unexpected conclusions. After treating all the data from the study, it was verified that the situation which was revealed by Birk and Kurtz in 1999 among other researchers, in relation to the alternative conceptions, the students had in all school levels and continue to appear even after all these years of study and development in this area.
