The conventional thermal processes of gold decoration of Rome bottles crystal glass produced by Atlantis® leads to the appearance of defects. These defects are related to the high temperature curing the gold inks, close to the softening temperature of the glass. In order to minimize these effects in the present study samples of crystal glass with a layer of gold ink were cured with a Nd: YAG laser ( = 1064 nm). The samples were painted with a gold ink for brush and a gold ink for decal, both used in the decoration of Rome bottles at the Atlantis® factory. The gold inks were analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) to identify the constituents of the inks and study the decomposition process. The laser gilding was conducted using the beam scanning a line (with the aid of a translation stage) and a serpentine patterns (with the aid of a galvanometer head). The line scanning mode was shown to be the most advantageous for the gold ink for brush, giving a bright and uniform film but without a good adhesion to the substrate film. In order to solve the lack of adhesion after laser gilding the samples were heat treated in an oven at temperatures lower than those used in the factory for decoration of bottles Rome: 380, 400, 425 and 450 ˚ C. This hybrid solution promotes both the decomposition of the constituents at the interface between the ink gold film and the crystal glass substrate and the interdiffusion, thus providing a better adhesion. The final gold film was characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, particularly through reflectance measurement, color coordinates in the Lab * system, electrical resistance by four-point method, scanning electron microscopy and adhesion measurements using a system of mechanical traction. In this work is also studied the laser treatment of ink for decal which allowed the best results since the resulting gold films were brighter, more uniform and more adherent than those obtained on the samples cured with laser using gold ink for brush and, therefore, closer to the reference sample of the factory. The laser treated of the gold ink for decal was performed using a beam scanning with the aid of the galvanometer head once the gilding is only possible for higher laser currents, 19 - 22 A, which are not possible with line scanning mode. The gold ink for decal demonstrated to be more suitable for decoration using only the laser technology. |
