ABSTRACT: Non-verbal communication issues have been largely referred to ethnomusicology and performance studies, namely the one concerning with the role of visual information in the perception and understanding of facial expressions and gestures. These emphasize and illustrate expressive intentions that exist among musicians. In the ensemble context visual information is even more relevant. Musicians use their eyes to communicate with each other and get synchronized movements. In this case they have a visual code through which they send their signs. Therefore, they are able to understand each other and the integration within the group is achieved. This research aims at studying several situations capable of articulating both blind and sighted musicians. And, it establishes the factors that influence interaction through the sound of the group. Thereby, it raises the question: which strategies should be designed to facilitate efficient interaction and synchrony when one of the musicians has visual disability? Four blind musicians were interviewed and their behaviour studied while they were performing. The same happened to the sighted musicians who had worked together with the blind musicians in three different situations, such as choral and instrumental genre, duet four hands and jazz band. Answers were analysed and compared and a conclusion was reached afterwards: there was an alternative strategy of interaction based on their breathing process. The blind musicians worked their movements individually and the ones who can see create their own movements in order to achieve synchronization. Finally, based on these strategies, a correlation was achieved between the body behaviour of the blind musicians and their daily movements.
