This report reflects the work carried out over an internship in the company Cerisol that produces high voltage insulators. The main intention was to develop aluminous ceramic porcelains for manufacturing insulators, the C130 type porcelain, following the designation given by the IEC 60672-3 standard to porcelains with a high content of alumina. It was prepared a composition using calcined bauxite as a source of corundum. This composition, referred to as PB1 (porcelain of bauxite 1) showed a low green mechanical strength (2.3 MPa), which is less than the minimum required, 4.5 MPa. Therefore, it was necessary to do another composition with a higher green strength. Based on the green strength of the plastic raw materials (kaolin and clays), a new composition was prepared lowering the amount of bauxite and increasing the total amount of plastic raw materials. This new composition, named PB2, had an oxide composition close to the previous one, and therefore it was not expected marked differences in their characteristics after firing. PB2 showed a green strength of 5 MPa, already above the minimum required. During the study of the plastic raw materials, it was found that the Pfefferkorn index was not consistent with the plasticity of each raw material (plasticity defined empirically, relating it to the green strength), but only an indication of the percentage of moisture which must be used for extrusion. The ceramic porcelains were fired at 1225 °C (temperature selected based on the analysis of the dilatometry) and showed zero water absorption. PB2 composition had a fired mechanical strength, 160 MPa, lower than PB1, 185 MPa, still being above the minimum value indicated by ICE 60672-3 standard, which is 140 MPa. The crystalline phases found after firing, corundum, mullite, quartz and anorthite, were present in both compositions virtually in the same proportions. The analyses of the microstructures obtained by SEM (coupled with EDS) allowed estimating the amount of corundum, ca. 27% by volume. With the aid of the density of the fired compositions, this corresponds to ca. 37% by weight of corundum in the microstructures, in accordance with the value expected. By default, the amount of glassy phase present in both compositions was 20%, much lower than expected. Assuming that the glassy phase is present in amounts greater than the calculated ones, the one present in sample PB1 should have a density of 1.9, higher than in sample PB2, 1.6, possibly due to higher amounts of dissolved alumina. A glassy phase with higher alumina content could explain the higher mechanical strength of porcelain PB1, since the crystalline phases are present in the same relative amounts. During the stage, other works were also carried out, including the inventory of tests performed in the ceramic industrial laboratory and tests monitoring of the production process. These activities enabled to be inserted into the work developed in the laboratory and to better understand the production process of ceramic insulators in the company. In this context, it was suggested the implementation of suggestion boxes, which results are not yet available.
