Der Schatten der Vergangenheit: Erinnerung und Erlösung in Jan Koneffkes Roman Eine Liebe am Tiber

Abstract

Dieser Aufsatz befasst sich mit dem im Jahre 2004 veröffentlichten Roman des deutschen Schriftstellers Jan Koneffke Eine Liebe am Tiber. Der Text, der mit der Ankunft einer deutschen Familie in Italien beginnt, ist ein tragikomischer Familienroman, der aus der Perspektive des Protagonisten Sebastian Wieland erzählt wird, mal aus der Sicht des Knaben während der turbulenten Zeit in Rom der späten sechziger Jahre, mal aus der Perspektive des Erwachsenen, der ein Vierteljahrhundert später zurückblickt und das Mosaik seines Lebens zu ergänzen versucht. Italien, der Schauplatz von Studentenunruhen, Attentaten der Roten Brigaden und Umtrieben der Neofaschisten, wird auch charakterisiert als „ein Land, das von Faulpelzen und Schlawinern bewohnt wird”, so der Vater des Protagonisten. Vorurteile und Klischees sind ein wichtiges Motiv in diesem Text, in dem Koneffke eine besondere Atmosphäre schafft, geprägt von Chaos, Lärm und Menschen mit zweifelhaftem Charakter. Der Tod des Vaters, ein ehemaliger Wehrmachtspilot, Anfang der 90er ist der Anlass zum Erzählen. Vor der eigenen Lebenskrise flüchtet Sebastian in die Erinnerung und setzt den Prozess der Suche nach einer verlorenen und unverstandenen Vergangenheit ein, in der Rom als wesentlicher Erinnerungsort seiner Identität wirkt. Der 1960 geborene Autor schildert in diesem Roman als Vertreter der jüngeren Schriftstellergeneration, wie die NS-Vergangenheit ihre Schatten bis zur Gegenwart werfen kann und die Identität der nachgeborenen Generationen damit stark beeinflusst.

This essay examines the novel Eine Liebe am Tiber, written by German author Jan Koneffke (born 1960) and published in 2004. The narrative, which begins with the arrival of a German family in Italy, is a tragicomedy that is developed upon the double perspective of the protagonist Sebastian Wieland: while some narrative sequences represent the perspective of the child during the socially and politically tumultuous years in Rom at the end of the 1960s, other sections project the perception of the adult that a quarter of a century later looks back into the past and tries to complete the mosaic of his own shattered existence. Italy, here the set of student agitations, assassinations by the Red Brigades and neo-fascist activities, is perceived by the father of the main character as “a land of slackers and smooth operators”. Prejudice and clichés are a very important motif in this narrative, in which Koneffke creates a special atmosphere, illustrated through chaos, noise and characters with dubious personal qualities. The death of the father, a former pilot of the Nazi armed forces, at the beginning of the 1990s, sets off the recalling process. Sebastian tries to escape from stagnation and profound personal crisis by immerging in his own memories and initiates the search for a lost and misunderstood past, in which the city of Rom operates as an essential ‘lieu de mémoire’ of his identity. As a representative of a younger generation of writers, Koneffke addresses the question of the national-socialist German past and demonstrates how it casts a shadow over the post-war generations and still influences their identity construction.
