Heavy metals occur in nature and environmental exposure to these is of high importance since there is an association between exposure and adverse effects on human health. This work was performed in the Northeast region of Portugal, Bragança-Vinhais where can find mafic and ultramafic rocks. The basis of this study is to evaluate the levels of some heavy metals in soil and medicinal and aromatic natural plants (MANP) that occur in the study area, better understand its distribution, compare the levels shown by each species of plant and ascertain the soil-plant system. A total of 18 soil samples and 36 samples of plant (Lavandula stoechas L.-14, Thymus mastichina L.-10 and Cistus ladanifer L.-12) were collected in the region of Bragança-Vinhais Soil samples were collected especially in forests, except for four samples that were collected in agricultural soils. These soils are classified essentially as leptosolos and cambisolos. The MANP sampled were naturally in the soil in the study area and were later separated into its various components (flower, leaf, stem and roots when they exist). All samples were analyzed by ICP-MS. We studied three heavy metals (Co, Cr and Ni) in soil and plants. In soils the range of concentration values present was: 14-149 Co in mg kg-1, Cr 16-491 in mg kg-1 and Ni 23-944 in mg kg-1. These concentrations are sometimes higher than the national levels or the world average and in some cases exceed the Dutch intervention values (or/also Canadian soil quality guidelines). The plants results shows that Lavandula stoechas L. was higher concentrations (mg kg-1) of Co, Cr and Ni in the leaves (16 in mg kg-1 Co, 86 in mg kg-1 Cr and 136 in mg kg-1 Ni). The roots present sometimes higher concentrations but always the same level. In Thymus mastichina L. the concentrations in the leaves were for 16 mg kg-1 Co, 90 mg kg-1 Cr and 117 mg kg-1 Ni. The roots always have lower concentrations than the sheets. In Cistus ladanifer L. the highest concentrations are observed in the leaves (8 mg kg-1 Co, 42 mg kg-1 Cr and 59 mg kg-1 Ni). The roots contents are also higher and at the same level. The Cr and Ni concentrations in plants are sometimes considered toxic or excessive. For a better understanding of the possibilities of these plants been used in phytoremediation and / or phytoextraction in soils contaminated the BAC (biological absorption coefficient), BAC (Bioaccumulation coefficient) and TF (translocation factor) were calculated. The Thymus L. mastichina (thyme) may be used studies in phytoremediation of Cr and Ni contaminated soils, because it showed high TF (10.7 and 7.8, respectively) values. Regarding Co, despite low concentrations, Cistus ladanifer L. (Cistus) showed high BAC and TF and according the literature could be used also in phytoremediation. Considering that this study focus essentially in aromatic and medicinal plants (AMPs) the author considers that they have additional economic interest in the use in perfumery, cooking, and pharmacology.pt
