ABSTRACT: This study had as its purpose to determine whether there exists a connection between body image, self-concept and school results in pre-adolescents. The investigation considered 254 students from the Municipality of Oliveira do Bairro aged 10 to 16 years old, who are 6th to 9th grade students of the school Escola EB 2/3 Dr. Fernando Peixinho. These were the evaluation instruments used: Piers-Harris Children’s Self-Concept Scale (PHCSCS-2) – Portuguese adaptation (Veiga, 2006); Scale of the Physical Self-Concept (Ribeiro & Ribeiro, 2003); Body Image Perception Questionnaire (Henriques, 2008); Socio-Academic Questionnaire (Henriques, 2008); Body Mass Index Percentile; School Results Criteria. The following conclusions are highlighted from this investigation: there is a straight connection between the self-concept and the physical self-concept; the self-concept levels diminish with age; the higher the self-concept, the higher the satisfaction with physical appearance, in its various dimensions, seems to be; there are differences between the genders when it comes to the level of self-concept, physical self-concept, satisfaction with physical appearance and satisfaction with all parts of the body, the male gender being the one to present higher average values in these dimensions; the female gender reveals better school reports than the male gender; the higher the school reports the higher the student’s satisfaction; the satisfaction concerning weight and height relates in a positive way with the physical self-concept; the perception of school reports is interconnected with the satisfaction with physical appearance and the satisfaction with the entire body; the higher the Body Mass Percentile the lower the satisfaction with one’s own appearance. Some of the implications which result from this study are mentioned, namely when it comes to a higher understanding of students throughout adolescence, a recognition of the need for a more adequate education to exist specifically in the transition of pre-adolescence, as well as a promotion of a higher awareness raising before educators and schools in this stage of development.por
