A atividade editorial em São Luís do Maranhão: memórias do passado, realidade presente

Abstract

O Maranhão viveu um período áureo no séc. XIX, na economia e na cultura, sendo o quarto mais rico do Império. Nesse tempo, a imprensa foi instalada em sua capital, São Luís, pelo português Bernardo da Silveira Pinto, governador da Província do Maranhão. Ainda no séc. XIX, a economia maranhense entrou em declínio, que se repercutiu negativamente na vida cultural e editorial do estado. No séc. XX, toda atividade de fabrico de livros se concentrou no eixo «Rio-São Paulo», maior centro editorial brasileiro e um dos maiores do mundo. Em finais do séc. XX, a atividade editorial ludovicense começa lentamente a reanimar-se. Primeiramente, em 1997, a cidade dos azulejos, dos casarões, de poetas e de ricas manifestações populares foi reconhecida pela UNESCO como Patrimônio Histórico e Cultura da Humanidade. Na viragem do milênio, após longo tempo apagado, o campo livreiro são-luisense ganha novo fôlego, com o aparecimento de novas editoras. A presente dissertação tem como principal objetivo caracterizar e analisar o processo de produção editorial em São Luís, nos últimos dez anos, período em que observamos uma importante, se bem que ainda tímida, evolução nesse ramo de atividade. Buscamos também situar o papel das editoras, hoje, no espaço da capital maranhense, e caracterizar os modos de produção editorial, circulação e comercialização do livro de São Luís, numa altura em que a edição se encontra numa fase de relançamento.

The nineteenth century was a golden period for the Brazilian Province (now Federal State) of Maranhão. With its prosper economy and culture this state achieved the fourth position within the richest in the Empire. In those days, the press was installed in the capital of Maranhão, São Luís, by the portuguese governor of the Province of Maranhão, Bernardo Silveira Pinto,. But already by the end of the 19th century the economy of Maranhão started to decline. This fact had a negative impact on the cultural life of the region, as well on its publishing activities.. In the 20th century, all book production was concentrated in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, an «axis» of the publishing industry which is now one of the greatest wordwide. By the end of the 20th century, the publishing activities in São Luís do Maranhão slowly started to regain some expression. In 1997 São Luís, with its beautiful ancient mansions and its rich folk culture was recognized by UNESCO as Historical Heritage and Humanity Culture. In the turn of the millennium, after a long somber century, the publishing industry begins to revive. The main goal of this dissertation is to characterize and analyze the last ten years of publishing activities in São Luís, having in mind the old glorious cultural background of this town in the 19th century and the memories of that glorious past.
