ABSTRACT: Domestic sources contribute to air quality changes despite their small dimension and emissions through wood combustion in fireplaces being practically emited during the coldest months. It is estimated that in Portugal PM10 emission by domestic combustion represents 16,2% of total emissions of this pollutant, being fireplaces a major amount of this emissions and in countries where winter is longer and rougher particulate matter emissions are even more significant. With this work it is pretended to provide relevante information on the contribution of this kind of emission to air quality, particularlly referring to particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5). The adopted methodology implicated inicially that it was characterized population’s behaviour relatively to the use of this heating equipment, estimating the number of opened and closed fireplaces, quantifying the average consumed wood by winter, therefore it has been developed a national inquiry. Emissions coming from this source concentrate higher values in the litoral area, between Oporto and the Setubal’s Peninsula, significant emissions have also been registed in interior north and centre regions. Emissions coming from this source concentrate higher values in the litoral area, between Oporto and Lisbon, also occurring significative emissions in the interior north and centre regions, namely those determinated by data provided by the inquiry. For north and interior centre regions, the effect in the quality air of emissions coming from domestic combustion are not very visible, not happening the same in the big metropolitan areas of Lisbon and mainly in Oporto, where PM concentrations are higher. Comparing sceneries with emissions coming from fireplaces with sceneries without this source, it is verified that the first originate higher concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 and in larger geographical areas.
