Design e inovação: madeira, substituição de materiais

Abstract

A madeira foi amplamente substituída por outros materiais, entre os quais os metais, betão e plásticos. Atendendo a que a madeira é renovável, investigase o potencial de utilização desta em substituição de outros materiais. Identificou-se que a escassez foi o principal factor a influenciar a substituição da madeira, e que para o efeito, contribuíram também algumas propriedades do material e ideologias. Entre os diversos factores que influenciam a inovação e substituição de materiais, apurou-se, que da legislação e aspectos sócio-culturais podem surgir barreiras, e que as questões ambientais constituem uma oportunidade de mudança. Comparativamente com os outros materiais, a madeira é uma alternativa sustentável; os materiais e tecnologias da madeira disponíveis actualmente permitem aplicações eficientes; e, as suas qualidades estéticas e culturais são apreciadas. Portanto, conclui-se que existe potencial em utilizar a madeira em substituição de outros materiais.

Wood has been largely replaced by other materials, such as metals, concrete and plastics. Considering that wood is renewable, the potential to use it in substitution of other materials is researched. It has been identified that scarcity was the main factor influencing wood substitution, and that some properties of the material and ideologies have also contributed to this replacement. Among several factors that influence materials innovation and substitution, legislation and social-cultural aspects are possible barriers, and environmental issues constitute an opportunity for change. In comparison with other materials, wood is a sustainable alternative; today, available wood materials and technologies allow efficient applications; and its aesthetic and cultural qualities are appreciated. Therefore, it is concluded that there is potential in using wood in substitution of other materials.
