resultados, sob a perspectiva do design.
During the post-war period, when the industrial conditioning imposed by the State was one of the determining factors that promoted the industrialization in Portugal, design was not considered a supporting tool in this process. Even without a design-informed project practice, the production of motoroperated vehicles of two or three wheels, which began on the second half of the 20th century, was successfully developed through nearly fifty years. The inclusion of Portugal in the EEC and consequent opening of markets to foreign production, together with the severe economic crisis that occurred in the 80’s decade, resulted in the close-up of an important part of this industry, whose fragility was revealed even through the difficulty to resist to mere changes in the legislation about driving licenses. Such cycle of evolution/extinction of motorcycle production on Portugal revealed itself as an opportunity for the analysis of its results under a designoriented perspective. This dissertation consists therefore in the characterization of the models designed and produced by this industry according to three analytic axes, typological, morphological, and of performance. The cultural assets left by such production represent a heritage of significant potentiality for the understanding of Portuguese history and culture in the 2nd half of the 20th century. Conveniently studied, such knowledge could help consolidate our country’s cultural identity and a memory that should be available to everyone. |
