continuidade. The motivation behind this project is related to concerns as results of our work as primary school teachers, when we found that although the responsibility to include all students (regardless of their social, cultural or ethnic background), and promoting their academic success and well-being, lies with the school, this doesn’t always occur. This is particularly evident in the case of gypsy children, who often live situations of school exclusion, which, in turn, lead to academic failure and / or dropout. Moreover, we believe that the children welfare in school will, among other factors, happen by promoting school-family relationship, which may dilute the distances that separate the school universe - with their logic, organization and specific culture - of the family universe of many children. Thus, this project aims to promote rapprochement between three gypsy families and the primary school that their children attend, attempting to contribute to increase educational and social inclusion of this group As a Participatory Research type of study that took place at a Primary School, we had the chance to work together with the gipsy students’ relatives, with their teachers and the social institution that supports them (Social and Child Center of Aguada de Baixo). The research techniques used were semi-structured interviews and Focus Groups. During this work, we realize that, in general, that school teachers assume that students and gypsy families do not engage in a similar way of other families, although their understood that they are harmed by it. Recognizing the need to strengthen this relationship, these teachers put the responsibility of this does not happen on families, because they believe they do not value the school or have proper skills. Consequently, there has been, by the school, an effort to promote the school-family relationship. In the other hand, initially, gypsies had not formed ideas about the importance of this relationship, which seems to have changed with the Focus Groups conducted. We believe that although this project may not have solidified attitudes, certainly it have stimulated some changes, which we would like to see continued. |
