ABSTRACT: Over the last few years we have been witnessing a more and more accelerated development of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), and this development has been provoking profound changes in our daily life in the most diverse areas. In what the Educational System is concerned, especially Mathematics, the insertion of such learning tools is seen by many investigators as a potential way of renewing the image society has about this area of knowledge, once they allow innovation in the teaching of this subject. However, the investigation that includes ICT as object of study is still scarce, so it is urgent to evaluate in a serious and rigorous way the real benefits that ICT can offer, especially to Mathematics. On the other hand, having in mind the aims of the recently created curricular area of “Oriented Study” (“Estudo Acompanhado” (EA) — a curricular area in which students learn study skills with teacher’s help) and the form it has been developed, we thought important to establish a partnership between Mathematics and this area. Therefore, we prepared a study whose main objectives are to evaluate the impact of resource exploration and treatment of information available on the Web, related to the didactic unit “Inverse proportionality. Graphical representations”, a study which took place in Maths lessons and “Oriented Study” sessions, on the construction of a more positive and correct perception of Maths and “Oriented Study” and on the development of mathematical and technological aptitudes and skills, both transversal and specific skills, on 9th graders. Bearing this context in mind, a ‘case study’ was conducted with strong connections to investigation-action, data were collected and studied according to a mist paradigm: qualitative and quantitative. The empiric part of the study took place in an urban school in the centre region during the third term in the academic year of 2004/2005 in a 9th grade class of 18 students, in which the investigator was also their Maths teacher. The students developed a set of tasks in Maths classes and “Oriented Study” sessions, to be done with resource to the WWW, properly oriented and structured, and presented as a ‘WebQuest’. From the analysis of the results, we concluded that the integration of the WWW in the teaching of Mathematics and in “Oriented Study” sessions, helped to motivate the students into a more profound, significant and effective learning of Mathematics and to a more positive and correct view on these areas, promoting the development of a vast diversity of aptitudes and skills by students, namely, internet search skills in group work; task formulation and resolution involving inverse proportionality and mathematical communication.
