Over the years, Portugal has registered an increasing number of immigrants from the most diverse areas of the world. Portuguese schools are a privileged space to welcome and integrate the children of immigrants, for whom the portuguese language often presents itself as not their first language. Therefore, it’s necessary to sensitize the school community, especially students and teachers, to linguistic and cultural diversity so that the integration and success of foreign students happen in the best way. For this process to be successful, it’s important to know and understand the representations that Portuguese students have of foreigners. Based on this assumption, the presente report aims mainly to identify the experiences portuguese students have with foreign languages and cultures and to analyze their representations about the foreigners. For that, a questionnaire was implemented to 18 students of a 4th year group of the Elementary School of the district of Aveiro and were carried out individual and group interviews. The methodology used in data processing was essentially qualitative. From the data analysis it’s possible to conclude that the majority of the students justifies their preference for a certain foreign individual due to the representations he has about his language. Students reveal fear of the unknown, eventually rejecting individuals whose country, language and culture they do not know or about which they have negative representations. It´s also concluded that racial discrimination occurs in portuguese schools, so it is essential to raise students' awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity.
