Daniel Rodriga, um dos grandes protagonistas das Nações Portuguesas do Mediterrâneo

Abstract

Daniel Rodriga, um judeu português natural de Bragança, foi o primeiro cônsul das Nações Hebraicas Levantina e Ponentina de Veneza e ocupa um lugar de destaque na história da república de Veneza, porquanto projectou e executou a famosa Scala de Split que redireccionou para a Sereníssima uma parte assinalável das trocas comerciais entre a Europa e o Império Otomano. Este diplomata português tudo fez para reforçar os antigos laços que uniam os membros das Nações Portuguesas dispersas pelas costas do Mediterrâneo (Veneza, Narenta, Split, Ragusa, Durazzo, Valona e Salonica). Pouco antes de morrer, Daniel Rodriga dita, em Português, o seu próprio testamento, firmado em Veneza, em 1603.

Daniel Rodriga, a Portughese Jew born in Bragança, was the first Consul of the Hebrew Levantine and Ponentine Nations of Venice and played a prominent role in the history of the Venetian Republic. He “invented” the entrepôt of Split and developed a new trade route redirecting through Venice a large part of the commercial traffic of Northern Europe with the Ottoman Empire. Along his life this Portuguese diplomat spared no effort to strengthen and reinstate the links among the Portuguese Nations scattered along the Mediterranean coasts (Venice, Narenta, Split, Ragusa, Durazzo, Valona and Salonika).In 1603, in Venice, shortly before he died, Daniel Rodriga dictated his last will in Portuguese.
