Peter Godwin e J.M. Coetzee como escritores pós-coloniais: memórias de infância em autores da África Austral.

Abstract

Esta dissertação visa focar as memórias de infância de dois autores contemporâneos da África Austral: Peter Godwin e J.M.Coetzee. Embora Godwin não tenha, ainda, alcançado o prestígio de Coetzee, este trabalho centra-se, principalmente, no seu livro Mukiwa: A White Boy in Africa (1996) que retrata sua fase de crescimento na Rhodesia. A título comparativo, fez-se uma análise menos extensiva das obras de Coetzee, Boyhood: Scenes From Provincial Life (1997) e Youth: Scenes From Provincial Life II (2002), uma vez que não existem, ainda, estudos feitos sobre estas obras. Assim, tornou-se necessário fazer um estudo comparativo das obras destes dois autores a fim de colmatar a falta de análises críticas das mesmas. Esta dissertação centra-se, portanto, no tratamento de algumas questões pós-coloniais neste sub-género literário de autobiografia, e a sua contribuíção para a compreensão dos eventos históricos neles retratados.

This dissertation focuses on the childhood memoirs of two contemporary white southern African authors: Peter Godwin and J.M. Coetzee. Although Godwin is not yet as widely acknowledged as Coetzee, this work is mainly centred on his book Mukiwa: A White Boy in Africa (1996) and portrays his growing up years in Rhodesia. For comparative reasons, Coetzee’s Boyhood: Scenes From Provincial Life (1997) and the follow-up Youth: Scenes From Provincial Life II (2002) were selected and analysed, even though their reading is not as extensive as Mukiwa. The fact that there are also no critical studies related to Peter Godwin, apart from a few brief book reviews, made it necessary to resort to another author in a comparative mode. This study thus concentrates on the postcolonial issues portrayed in this sub-genre of autobiography, and its contribution to the understanding of the historical events they relay.
