Neste momento representa 14% do
a biomassa florestal (CTBF).
sustentável (1,0 a 2,0 Mton/ano). As CTBF são os maiores consumidores (1,3
Mton/ano), seguindo-se as centrais de cogeração (0,7 Mt/ano), as unidades de
pellets (0,3 Mton/ano), cimenteiras (0,2 Mton/ano) e outras pequenas
actividades (0,2 Mton/ano).
As
Biomass has been playing, at different levels, a major role in the development of societies. Nowadays accounts for 14% of the world’s total energy consumption and around three quarters of the renewable energy, with a growing tendency. Biomass can substitute the use of fossil fuels in the most diverse ends, therefore, is considered a solution to face climate change. In Portugal, the use of biomass for the production of energy has been stimulated through political and economic incentives, with focus on forestry biomass. The use of forestry biomass residues was initially steered to the production of electricity, resulting in the implementation of several forestry biomass power plants. Beside those, the forestry biomass sector encompasses the cogeneration and pellets plants, cement plants and other small activities, all of them steered to heat production. The lack of regulation related to the use of forestry biomass residues allowed the excessive growth of the sector, which is today consuming more forestry biomass residues (2,7-2,9 Mton/year) than the sustainable amount that the forestry can provide (1,0-2,0 Mton/year). The forestry biomass power plants are the bigger consumers (1,3 Mton/year), followed by the cogeneration power plants (0,7 Mt/year), pellets plants (0,3 Mton/year), cement plants (0,2 Mton/year) and other small activities (0,2 Mton/year). Power production from forestry biomass residues is less efficient than the production of heat or the polygeneration of different energy produtcs. This fact make the forestry biomass power plants the weakest element of the biomass to energy system. These power plants are operating due to the feed-in tariff, which is exacerbating the debt of the electricity tariff. It is essential to increase the energy efficiency of these power plants in order to guarantee their sustainability in the Portuguese energy system. The polygeneration strategies are an innovating approach to the development of sustainable energy systems. Their main goal is to increase the energy efficiency of the generation units, through the integration of advanced conversion, storage and transmission technologies with management models that optimize the generation of different energetic products in simultaneously, resulting in the maximization of the profit accordingly to the demand. The scenarios presented show that through the implementation of polygeneration systems is possible to achieve savings around 40 to 41% of the primary energy consumed by the power plants. Is presented a study case about the integration of the Mortágua biomass power plant with a pellets production unit. The heat wasted by the Mortágua biomass power plant could eventually be used by the dryer of the pellets unit, giving an annual saving of about 21000 Mton/year of biomass forestry residues. |
