Sixty-five years after the Schuman Declaration on 9th May 1950, the European Union (EU) faces growing skepticism by its citizens, which has been reflected by low participation and involvement in the European elections and other initiatives. This thesis aims to analyze the importance of creating EU brand ambassadors through internal marketing initiatives, aiming to understand in greater depth what internal marketing is being performed, while also analyzing the perceptions of European citizens with regards to the EU. Three studies were conducted for this dissertation (in a mixed research design effort, combining qualitative and quantitative approaches) involving surveys and interviews with European citizens, in Germany and in Portugal, in order to perceive and analyze the perception of those surveyed citizens. Through the survey results the perceived image of the EU by its citizens was measured, as well as the perceived knowledge, perceived commitment, perceived trust and perceived satisfaction. We conclude that there are not, in general (in eleven of the thirteen items tested), statistically significant differences between the Portuguese and German respondents surveyed. Therefore, we can infer that there are similarities between the two nations – although, among the young people surveyed, there is greater dissatisfaction with membership in the EU and less trust in the EU institutions by the Portuguese sample – indeed in two of the thirteen items analyzed statistically significant relationships were found, that is, differences between the two populations. Based on the analysis of interviews and survey results, this dissertation argues that it is possible to create a European culture, to improve the EU's image and to create brand ambassadors of the European Union. We also conclude that there are two predictive variables of the EU's image which are statistically significant, in particular the positive influence of the EU on its citizens, and the citizens' trust in the EU institutions.
