ABSTRACT: The report takes a traineeship as a base where the objective was to understand the types of credit to the consumers, and what caused interest in studying the debt of the families, a concept connected with the credit to the consumers, to whom it gave rise what this report had as the principal objective understanding how several demographic/economic variables were influencing the debt of the Portuguese families. The developed work is based on a first part constituted by a theoretical framing on the subject - debt of the families and the studies carried out in Portugal about the same thing. In a second part an empirical study is carried out where through the data of the families of Aveiro obtained in the “Decisões e Soluções”, enterprise, where the traineeship was carried out, can study which is the impact of determined variables in the debt of the families of Aveiro. Through the revision of the literature I found some studies effectuated in Portugal, but there is no great available literature about this subject, since it is a relatively recent subject and to which few authors still devote themselves. Nevertheless I could verify that there are two types of credit to the consumers, the credit to the consumption and the credit to the dwelling and since from the decade of 90 is that a great expansion of the debt happened, in spite of increasing the number of contracts of credit to individuals. A bigger increase of credits always happened to the dwelling of credits to the consumption, nevertheless in the last two years a light reduction happens in the growth of the credit to the dwelling and a significant increase in consumer credit. The already fulfilled studies tell the profile of the debtor and from there we can check which are the variables that influence the increase of the debt and they also tell that the profile of the overin debt one and of the non-dutiful that shows us which of classes are more vulnerable to unexpected situations. With the data I have got open access in the enterprise I created variables that I understood like explicative ones for the level of debt of the families. I created with these 3 OLS models (linear regressions) that aim to explain the debt and to show how these variables influence it too. The models I could check the results are the sameof all the work carried out during the traineeship and the editorial staff of this report. It is a conclusive achievement of debt that the profit, the value of the installment, the tax of effort, the tax of interest, the age, the specialization of the representative of the familiar lodger, the type of credit, among other variables. It is possible to verify that the debt increases with the profit, with the specialization of the representative of the lodger, with the age, among others, and it decreases with the tax of interest, with the tax of effort, with the value of the installment, among others.
