The image of a tourist destination has a decisive role in the selection process and the behavior of individuals during and after the visit. Therefore, as the image of a destination has a great influence on consumer behavior, it is mandatory for destinations to be aware of their reality, and change it if necessary. Although a negative image is a major obstacle to attract visitors, literature proves that, by using the right strategies, it is actually possible to change the negative image of a destination. The objective of this research is to analyze the image of Estarreja, a tourist destination with a long term negative image, caused by industrialization and its consequent environmental problems. The aim is to understand how the Estarreja image has changed, to the point that it is currently associated with nature tourism. Furthermore, it is fundamental to examine if there are differences in the perceived image of visitors and residents, as well as the influence of the BioRia project on the image changing process. 365 questionnaires were collected: 200 referring to residents in Estarreja and 165 were non-residents. The main results of this study show that the BioRia project has been decisive to change Estarreja’s image. Therefore, the destination tends to be less associated with pollution and more related to the contact and concern for nature. In general, respondents were satisfied with the current image of Estarreja and BioRia, considering that this nature tourism related project has changed the image of Estarreja in a tourism point of view, which helps the attraction of more visitors. |
