Contributos da biblioteca escolar para a promoção da leitura em língua inglesa

Abstract

O presente estudo reflete sobre o papel que a biblioteca escolar pode ter enquanto instrumento privilegiado na promoção da leitura, nomeadamente, em língua inglesa, junto de docentes e discentes. A partir de uma análise quantitativa e qualitativa da realidade vivida por três bibliotecas escolares diferentes é feito um diagnóstico das situações encontradas. Esta caracterização é o ponto de partida de uma ação experimental de leitura em língua inglesa com o livro-álbum, tendo como público-alvo alunos do 7º. ano do Ensino Básico e do 11º. ano do Ensino Secundário. As respostas obtidas são analisadas à luz da teoria da compreensão literária de Lawrence Sipe de modo a demonstrar a recetividade que esta modalidade editorial obtém junto do público supracitado. Os resultados obtidos demonstram que o livro-álbum, dadas as suas características e a multiplicidade de temáticas que aborda, se constitui como um veículo singular na promoção da leitura em língua inglesa.

This study is about the role that school library may have as a unique instrument in the promotion of reading, namely in English, among teachers and students. After analysing the information gathered from three different school libraries, both quantitatively and qualitatively, an experimental action regarding picture books and 7th and 11th grade students took place. The responses produced were examined in the light of the theory of literary understanding of Lawrence Sipe, in order to demonstrate the interest that this publishing genre obtains with the aforementioned public. The conclusions show that picture book is a special vehicle in the promotion of English reading, given its features and the multitude of issues it addresses.
