Abstract: | Nos últimos anos, tem-se verificado que as seguradoras têm pago avultadas
quantias a título de indemnizações, resultantes de catástrofes de origens
natural e humana.
consequente destas empresas.
dificultar a respectiva aquisição e integração.
In the last few years, we can noticed that the insurance companies have paid large amounts for indemnities resulting from natural and human calamities. As a consequence, the profit margins are highly affected, which may place in danger the survival of such companies. It is therefore urgent that these societies analyze, determine and appreciate with precision the risks coming from eventual disasters. On the other hand, the competence existing in the insurance market requires from the insurance companies a better knowledge of their actual and potential customers in order to offer them the best products at the best prices and at the right moment, but always taking into consideration the risk exposure. This way, a correct estimation of the risk and a good knowledge about customers are two essential factors in the insurance activity. Considering that most part of the data collected by the insurance companies has a place reference, it is legitimate to say that the Geographical Information System can help on a more advised and consequent management of these societies. Having as a basis the strong geographical component existing in the insurance business, this work has the purpose to analyze the applicability of the SIG in the value chain of the insurance companies, namely in the marketing, policies and claims, and to identify the main difficulties to be faced in order to use this kind of system. One of the main conclusions of this work is that the SIG can bring competitive advantages to the insurance companies, since that all the necessary data exists. This data is available in Portugal, but its producing is spread over several entities and without normalization, which may difficult the respective acquisition and integration. Furthermore, the level of the data dispersion is more appropriated to the territory planning than to the data analysis. This reality is the main barrier at national level for the utilization of this technology in businesses like the insurance. |
