(Hum)animalidades na ficção de José Saramago

Abstract

Este trabalho pretende refletir sobre as estratégias de representação narrativa e alcance ideológico das relações entre o animal e o humano na ficção de José Saramago, nomeadamente no conto «Centauro», incluído na coletânea Objecto Quase, e nos romances Ensaio sobre a Cegueira e A Viagem do Elefante. Assim, apresenta-se, num primeiro momento, uma sondagem histórica sobre a inscrição do animal na literatura e na reflexão filosófica, destacando, depois, os processos ficcionais de animalização do homem e de humanização do animal e de construção da alteridade ontológica do animal.

This work intends to reflect upon the strategies of narrative representation and the ideological purposes underlying the relationship between animal and human in José Saramago's fiction, particularly in the short story «Centauro», included in the collection Objecto Quase, and in the novels Ensaio sobre a Cegueira and A Viagem do Elefante. After sketching a historical overview of the relevance of the animal in literary and philosophical tradition, we have highlighted the fictional strategies seeking to animalize man and humanizing the animal, and analysed the construction of the animal's ontological alterity.
