This works seeks to examine the effect of intergenerational participation in respect of activities relating to the Biblioteca Escolar (School Library) on reading motivation. To that end, three lines of inquiry were made, each relating to the reading habits and practices of students in the 3rd and 4th year of the 1º Ciclo do Ensino Básico (First Cycle of Basic School), and the parents and grandparents of such students. Moreover, after the data had been collected and analysed, a motivational model for reading was built, having as its foundation the intergenerational relationship (between these pupils and their parents/grandparents). Finally, further inquiries were made into the manner of understanding whether such children considered the intergenerational contact that had been fostered by such reading activities was important and the ways in which such contact had led to a stronger motivation in them for reading. In conclusion, the activities developed by the Biblioteca Escolar resulted in the majority of students feeling greater motivation when reading in the presence of parents and grandparents, suggesting that these activities will be maintained by them and, indeed, that the majority of parents and grandparents are open to being involved in those same activities on the basis that they consider their children/grandchildren developing positive reading habits so important. |
