The need to find alternatives to the use of fossil fuels for the production of thermal and electric energy has led to an increased use of biomass as solid fuel. There are several options for energy conversion of biomass being the thermochemical conversion, and in particular the fluidized bed combustion, the most widely used. This technology has proved suitable for this type of process, it allows considerable flexibility in the use of various types of fuels, and is quite efficient from an energy standpoint. The combustion of biomass in fluidized bed is influenced by several factors such as operating conditions and fuel characteristics. It is therefore essential to understand the technology of energy conversion and the characteristics of the biomass used as fuel for successfully achieving good energy conversion efficiencies. In this work was characterized the residual forest biomass in Portugal, in order to study their influence on the combustion process in fluidized bed. The residual forest biomass studied is derived from the slaughter of eucalyptus and pine, forest operations and maintenance such as acacia. It was observed that the biomass after grinding and drying at air conditions for the several types of biomass the moisture content varied in the range 10% to 14% (mass, am), the ash content is in the range 1% to 4% (mass, db) and volatile matter content varied in the range 80% to 84% (mass, db). With respect to elemental composition the carbon content varied in the range of 45% to 49% (mass bssc), and the hydrogen content in the range of 6% to 8% (mass, bssc). Regarding the analysis of soluble chemical elements, the biomass which showed higher values were the leaves and branches of eucalyptus. During the experiments the combustion reactor in pilot-scale fluidized bed were evaluated the effects of the type of biomass and stoichiometry in the performance of the reactor. The temperature throughout the reactor and the composition of the gaseous effluent in terms of O2, CO2, CO, were monitored. It was found that the stoichiometry influences the concentration of the different compounds in the gaseous effluent. Observing a positive effect on the reduction of CO when stoichiometry is increased. One important aspect to underline, derivative from the fact that was observed that the feeding of the solid fuel plays an important role in the performance of the combustion process. It has been found that the irregularities in the fuel supply results in high values for the concentration of compounds such as CO, which besides being a pollutant is also an indicator of inefficiency of the combustion process. In this context, it is noted that the physical characteristics of the solid fuel influencing the feeding process. The fuel derived from residual forest biomass chipping resulting from slaughter pine showed better transport characteristics, and therefore a better performance of the fluidized bed reactor during the combustion process comparatively to the fuel derived from eucalyptus or acacia. However, for the different kinds of biomass, it has been found that although some irregularities in the supply of fuel, and which is translated by fluctuations in the composition of the gaseous effluent, the temperature in the reactor remained relatively stable over time. This behavior reflects the characteristics of the fluidized bed as appropriate for the combustion of various types of solid fuel, as well as to dampen the fluctuations related to the characteristics of the fuel, and thereby ensure a relatively isothermal operation.
