Estes
ensaiados separadamente. The use of geosynthetics in railways has proved to be an attractive solution from a technical and economic point of view. The inclusion of geosynthetics in railways structures allows: controlling the deformations imposed by the increasing axial load, increasing the lifetime of the structure and to reducing maintenance costs. In this work the effects of two damage mechanisms relevant for railway applications of geosynthetics were analysed, abrasion and installation damage (also named mechanical damage). These damage mechanisms were induced using laboratory tests, isolated and sequentially, on a geocomposite constituted by a geotextile with a geogrid over it (without any mechanical connection). Installation damage mainly results from placing and compacting operations of the filling material in the geosynthetic vicinity. Abrasion is a consequence of the movement of the aggregate over the geosynthetic associated to the trains’ passage over the rails. The effects of the mechanical and abrasion damage induced on the short-term mechanical behaviour of the geocomposite were assessed using tensile tests. From the results, reduction factors were calculated and the existence of synergy between the two damage mechanisms analysed was assessed. From the tests results it was possible to conclude there was a reduction of the tensile strength after mechanical damage, while after abrasion it has increased. There were also reductions of the secant stiffness of the material, particularly relevant after mechanical damage followed by abrasion. The results obtained were also compared with other from similar studies where the two geosynthetics (geotextile and geogrid) were tested separately. |
